omaha hilo insurance strategyIn pot-limit and no-limit Omaha hi-lo games insurance policy is often taken in case a player goes all-in and bargaining no longer takes place. It is extremely fair in Omaha.

Insurance means that a player having the best chances to win the pot agrees to pay back a certain sum of money (premium) to the player laying out the insurance if his hand is folded. If the opponent draws badly the insurer pays him the defined sum of money as compensation. Thus the insured gets back from the pot at least the sum which the insurer promised to pay if the insured loses the deal. The insurer can be his opponent, a player not taking part in the pot or somebody who doesn’t play in the pot at all.

The term pot-limit means that a player can’t make a bet more than that of the pot. However one should remember that a player who raises bets has to call the existing bet first.

For example, there are $100 in the pot and Player A bets $50, Player B wants to raise the bet to the maximum so first he sees his opponent’s $50 (now the pot is $200) and then raises $200. Acting this way Player B actually puts in the pot $250 and now every next player entering the pot is expected to put $250 in the pot.

Here are some tips to help you avoid the most common errors in pot-limit games:

1) Don’t stick to closely to nut flush draw!

Nut flush draw is a good hand in holdem. If a pair appears on the board you have chances to win anyway if you draw the flush. A pair to an ace is usually a winning combination as well. In Omaha forming a pair with board cards is usually fatal and two aces win a pot seldom. Read more
