This post is devoted to the history of Red Dog Poker. This poker is played at different offline and online casinos. Of course, my focus is on online sites where you can have fun any time you want.

This gamble as the other card games has very interesting history. Card games have come to the modern world from the approximately 11th century, some experts say the cards have the Chinese origins, because this particular nation has invented paper, but the fact is Europeans has performed cards to the general public.

The card design with spades, hearts, clubs and diamonds was invented in France. But the look of the pack of cards was changing during the centuries. Americans began to produce new cards adding some peculiarities: indexes, double headed court cards, round corners and Joker.

The Old West can be called the fatherland of the original game Red Dog Poker, it is the place where it has become popular in online casino gambling. After the French revolution in 19th century card games have been spread all over the Old West. Red Dog was one of the first games played at that time. It also had some other names, for instance Ace Deuce and between the sheets, which described the origin of this game. The rues of the game are built around the concept of the distance between two cards, and the number of cards situated between them.

But at that time the gamblers faced with the great problem, it was very easy to cheat playing this game and at some period Red Dog lost its popularity and disappeared. But at the beginning of the 20th century the American Government understood that unregulated gambling industry which was functioning without any control led to corruption and development of the organized crime. Though Nevada State declared gambling as a crime in 1910, this decision didn’t make the situation better and probably worsen it, some members of the government came into the gangster circles. At last in 1931 the games of chance were legalized in Las Vegas, at that moment Red Dog Poker appeared again, but the different changes touched it.

Red Dog is rather easy to play, so you don’t need some specific skills and talents to win the game. Everyone can play it and get much pleasure, in contrast for example to Blackjack, where you need to concentrate and the result will also depend on the other players’ skills, Red Dog is the perfect way to relax and spend time. You can’t find Red Dog at any casino, but now it gains the mass popularity again and spends all over the gambling sites.

The short description of the best poker game rules is the following: the player gets three cards from the deck and bets that the third card will fall between the two cards which have been first. You should take into account that the cards are ranked from high to low and the cards’ suits are ignored.

Insurance Strategy in Pot-Limit and No-Limit Omaha High-Low Games. The 1st Part

In pot-limit and no-limit Omaha hi-lo games insurance policy is often taken in case a player goes all-in and bargaining no longer takes place. It is extremely fair in Omaha.

Insurance means that a player having the best chances to win the pot agrees to pay back a certain sum of money (premium) to the player laying out the insurance if his hand is folded. If the opponent draws badly the insurer pays him the defined sum of money as compensation. Thus the insured gets back from the pot at least the sum which the insurer promised to pay if the insured loses the deal. The insurer can be his opponent, a player not taking part in the pot or somebody who doesn’t play in the pot at all.

The insurance practice has its advantages and disadvantages in poker practice

The positive side lays in the facts that players stay in the game, those who have little money are protected and there is an additional opportunity of using playing skills.

The main disadvantage of insurance is that it slows down the game substantially. In Omaha for the same period of time fewer games can be played than in holdem that is why insurance practice can slow down the game even more especially for those in tight.

Another disadvantage (as I see it) is how discussing of pot odds makes unaccustomed players to feel nervous. In most cases it allows them to understand how wrong it was to go all-in. Some players explain their dislike for insurance because an opponent can be bent to call a big bet if he is sure to get back a part of his money. As for me any addition to the game which makes big bet call more probable is not a bad thing. If my big bets are called oftener in case of insurance then it is more like a case for than against using insurance.

I don’t mind using insurance but only in big pots and only when there is just one more card to appear on the board. I think insurance should be excluded from any poker game if there are two more cards to appear on the board.

Should you get insured yourself?

Only if the insurer estimates the insurance sum in the wrong way otherwise you make it even worse for you. You don’t need to buy insurance without serious reasons. If you have little money and the loss of the pot risks your working capital then yes, insurance is recommended.

Another reason for you to buy insurance is failure protection in the beginning of gaming session in order that failures in the beginning didn’t influence your further game. If you consider yourself a player subjected to losing balance in case a long-range hand draws better than you, it is better to be patient and buy insurance; it can turn out less expensive for you now than your nerves throughout the whole session later.

See the beginning in Pot Limit Omaha HiLo Game Tactics. Part I.

4) Usually to accelerate the game the pot sum is somehow rounded.

All extra chips in the pot left after rounding are considered one additional unit. For example the pot is rounded to a hundred dollars ant its real size is $725, now the maximum allowed bet is $800.

(Here is an example of understanding by players that extra kidney is not counted. In our example it means that the maximum bet is $700. This method allows players as well as the dealer to follow the real pot size easier, because usually the pot size may be calculated according to the number of players. Traditionally the first method is used and in any game using the second method it must be announced beforehand.)

5) Minimum bet should be set up for every blind structure.

Usually it will be the most valuable chip used to enter after blind. For example if blind structure is $1-2-5 and the enter is $10 then the minimum street unit will be $5 chip. This situation means that no extra chips lower than $5 can be bet even when a player goes all-in and only if he doesn’t bet five of them at once. If chip value is used neither for ante nor for rounding the pot it cannot be used in combination.

For example: blind structure $25-25-50 and time price is $25 chip for every 20 minutes. Since $5 chips can’t get in the game they can’t be stored (if only a player’s intention is not to put them on purpose) and they will not take part in the game at all. Sometimes it looks similar to online slot machines game tactics.

6) The number of raises is not limited.

There is no need for it because it won’t take long for some player to bet all-in because of quickly growing pot size.

7) A player has the right to know how much money has his opponent for his game.

On this basis it is preferable to change all your cash for chips. If a game runs in a public place – a pit controlled by government informing services when converting the chips in the cash desk, in big pits the use of paper money may be allowed.

In this case the only allowed way of paying is by one-hundred-dollar bills. In such a situation a player can estimate approximately the amount of opponent‘s money without the necessity to disturb this person and to slow down the game asking for the exact calculation. Chips of high value should be placed in front rows where everyone can see them. Chips more valuable than those used for entering the game must not be used. Each player has the right for unimpeded observing of opponent’s chips and for calculating his own on inquiry.

It is advisable to learn the rules of pot limit games before playing them. Also don’t be too lazy and find out if there are any conformance exceptions in the gambling joint you’re going to play. I often heard bad rules and wrong decisions from the managers and workers of gambling joints because they were generally used to limit poker. If the dealer makes a decision which can influe the money distribution, don’t be ashamed of asking for the staff decision and don’t just believe the dealer’s words.

The Procedure of Playing Pot Limit Hi Lo Games. The 1st Part

The term pot limit means that a player can’t make a bet more than that of the pot. However one should remember that a player who raises bets has to call the existing bet first.

For example, there are $100 in the pot and Player A bets $50, Player B wants to raise the bet to the maximum so first he sees his opponent’s $50 (now the pot is $200) and then raises $200. Acting this way Player B actually puts in the pot $250 and now every next player entering the pot is expected to put $250 in the pot.

In Omaha the entering bet (first after the big blind) often is 2 or 2.5 times higher than the big blind. Thereby it is often difficult to estimate how much money the first player can bet – how much money was there after he had called. (Because it defines the raising size). Now we have to work out a rule concerning the entering sum for games in which a player enters the pot for a sum higher than the big blind. Most Omaha games use to define the entering money the following rule: “Maximum input is doubled against minimum.” After someone has entered the pot we return to the usual for pot limit games counting system.

Though in various poker rooms poker rules are not universal there is a certain opinion consensus as to the rules for playing pot limit poker games.

I want to draw your attention to the standard set of pot limit Omaha hilo rules.

1) Raising if it’s not all-in has to be equal or higher than any previous bet or any raise on this street.

Certain pits neglect this requirement in heads-up games. I think this rule should always be applied because this is a rule in a lot of regions of the country, small raise will thus work for them. If a small raise is allowed in heads-up games there will appear situations when one opponent says “I raise!” and the other folds his cards at once without even waiting to find out the size of the raise, yet the raiser wanted to increase the bet only for one chip.

2) To resume bargaining the all-in bet has to be equal or higher than any previous raise or a bet on the same street.

(It doesn’t have to be equal to the total bet.) Compare this rule with the limit poker rule concerning half a bet or higher to resume bargaining.

3) The pot size to define the maximum allowed raise includes a sum which a player must put in the pot to call a bet.

The chips which were excluded from the pot (to make it even) and any other money necessary to put in the pot because of a missed blind are also included.

Pot Limit Omaha High Low Combination Quiz. The 2nd Part

Read beginning in Omaha Hi Low Step By Step Guide. Part I.

5) Your hand AK77 Flop 1087

You’re on the button and have three sevens. A bet is made and players call it. Everyone has a lot of chips. Your actions?

Fold your cards quickly. You’ve already been beaten in here. And you will never know if there is a higher set against you. Even if no one has a set you have to draw the missing seven or the last two board cards have to form a pair because it is likely that someone is going to have a stronger full in case ten or eight comes on the board.

6) Your hand AKJ9 Flop 952

You have top pair and your word is second in the pot of four. First player checks. What do you do – check or bet?

Bet. The flop structure indicates that it isn’t likely that someone has anything good. Your top pair maybe is not the best hand but hardly will anyone play against you and you have a lot of possibilities to improve your hand on the turn if someone calls you.

7) Your hand AQJ8 Flop Q74

You’re on the button in a pot for four without bargaining. You have top pair and flush draw from Jack. Do you bet or take a free card?

It is worth bargaining. It’s not that you like your hand a lot but all your opponents checked. In your hand you have enough to understand that they weren’t lucky with the flop. Believe their check and expect that you’ll take the pot without a fight.

8 ) Your hand 9865 Flop 762

A player in forced position opens the street by raising and someone in middle position calls him and you call. Flop gives you big straight draw. The first who made a bet now also bets on the flop, the other player folds his cards and now it’s your turn. You and your opponent both have a lot of money in front of you. Btw, if you like to play live roulette or bingo you’re welcome to visit mentioned sites.

Raise. It is possible that your opponent has jumped over his head with only aces in his hand. Flop is not worth opening street with a raise. Let’s see if he can stand the pressure.

The main factor defining whether you should raise on the flop or not, having a drawing hand, is your decision as for the hand of the betting player meaning that either he tries to steal the pot or he really has a strong hand.

If you run into something unexpected you have a relying decent hand. Simple calling is game tactics for losers.

Pot Limit Omaha High Low Combination Quiz. The 1st Part

In the following quiz imagine that you play pot limit Omaha against middle-smart opponents.

1) Your hand AKJ8 Flop 1088

You bet the pot against four opponents and two of them call. On the turn there comes insignificant card, say two. All players still have a lot of money. Your actions?

Answer: If you don’t play against beginners then none of them has overpair and none of them draws to a straight. One opponent has the missing eight another perhaps has two tens in the hand. You definitely should check and maybe fold your cards if someone keeps on bargaining. You are lucky to be called by two players letting you read their hands because your decision would have been much more complicated if you had been called by a single player.

2) Your hand AA83 Flop Q107

In preflop you immediately began bargaining and two players sitting after you call. Everyone has a lot of chips, should you bargain on the flop or not?

Such a flop horrifies me! I don’t have high chances for the best hand but even if I did there are so many straight draws anyway that someone will draw better than me or kick me out of the pot. Even if I would be just called and by a miracle I would draw third ace on the turn, anyway my hand is not so good because someone easily could have drawn straight by this card.

3) Your hand AKQ10 Flop 972

You began to bargain in preflop and three players called you. With the flop you form flush draw from king. Should you bargain?

Somebody who has nut flush draw and a pair will bring you a lot of troubles. Playing a pot for three is a disaster. Pass (check) is a game about possibilities.

4) Your hand A A52 Flop KJ8

You’re in the first position (on a blind to the left from the button) and you bargained in preflop. Four players called. You have nut flush; what do you do – bet or check?

In pot limit Omaha having got nuts you should vary your game style. Any behavior can be wrong. Since I have been bargaining in preflop, I’d rather keep on bargaining in the given situation because someone may think that I have single ace of spades and try to steal the pot (And I can do that).

Another factor is additional money in the pot because of bargaining in preflop. Quite probably that someone having nut flush will try and set me down especially if the pot is big enough already. And finally high cards on the board indicate the possibility of two pairs or three-of-a-kind and you will claim payment from somebody for trying to draw something better than you.

This is only beginning. Read the Pot Limit Omaha High Low Case Study. Part II.

This post continues about strategy of playing pot-limit Omaha high-low. The beginning of my thoughts please read:

Omaha HiLo Pot Limit Tips. Part IV

12) Don’t take defensive position each time a frightening card comes on the board!

Quite often on the board there comes a card creating opportunities for straight or flush. If it happens and my hand is not improved I ask myself a question: do I still want this pot? If the answer is yes and I am the player who bet on the flop I continue to bargain; but if the answer is no I usually check.

Here’s an example illustrating such a decision. Assume I bargained on the flop and one opponent called me and there are J95 on the board. On the turn there comes K creating on the board opportunities for a new straight and new two-card flush. If I bargained only on jacks and nines my hand would be bad. My opponent may have a pair and king and he drew better than me and besides that there are a lot of other winning combinations.

It is possible that now he has flush draw in clubs. My intention is to pass (check) and fold my cards in case he makes a bet. On the other hand if I have three jacks my intention is to bargain as if the king has given me nuts. If I check on this hand my opponent will either take a free card or will bargain as if he has drawn straight. If he bargains and I call it is likely that he knows my hand and he will control the situation.

For me the best tactics is to think that the king has not given him nuts and keep on bargaining. Even if my opponent has straight I will buy a higher combination anyway in one of four cases if I have a three-of-a-kind. Compare it to one of ten cases when my hand will be improved to a winning one only if I have two pairs.

Pot-limit Omaha is not a game for those who won’t bargain without a winning hand.

Almost every new card opened on the board is scary.

These twelve tips aren’t enough to ensure my victory in pot limit Omaha. There are a lot of secrets in the game and one needs much time to master them. However, they have to give you good understanding of common approach to the game which will allow you to reach your potential. You’ll require long game practice to see how various ideas work.

The final result of these long hours at the table is an opportunity to earn a lot of money in addition to the pleasure of playing the most difficult form of poker as of today. But you’ve always wanted to drive a Rolls-Royce, haven’t you?

Helpful Advices About Omaha High Low Tactics. Part III

10) Respect preflop raises.

Raising in preflop usually means possession of high pair or high cards. A lot of players crawling into the pot for a minimum bet automatically call raises. Usually you can call a raise on a hand like 10976 but it is dangerous to call on AK108.

Your reasons for entering the pot on the former hand are based on the strength of high cards but somebody may say that in this aspect he has a better hand. Believe him and fold your cards.

11) In a pot with a lot of players be sure to draw to nuts.

Assume there are J93 on the board and your cards are J1087, this means that you have top pair, flush draw from Jack and thirteen-sided straight. This is a hand I would fight with against one opponent. Against two or three opponents this hand is not so strong.

Usually you are in a sandwich position between three-of-a-kind and nut flush draw. Only ten cards give you a winning hand over the association of these two combinations and there are a number of lockout (a card winning the pot for your opponent) and redraw (finishing combinations by the last card when it seemed that you’ve already won) situations in the pack. Only two red sevens form you nut straight. When playing this kind of hand be sure to create a heads-up situation before putting a lot of money in the pot. Some digression – Denmark poker called Poker anbefalinger – Poker anbefalinger provides great information about poker, casino and bingo to people in Denmark.

At times some players may feel the disadvantageous position they are in before others have already put their money in the pot.

I want to draw your attention to a hand really played by English player of highest class Derek Buxter in a well-known London club Victory: KQJ9. I sat on his left and raised in preflop, four other players called and he called too. On the flop there came A109. Consequently Buxter got thirteen-sided straight draw and the second nut flush draw.

To Buxter’s surprise a player sitting on his right and acting the first opened the street by the pot bet. Buxter thought that the player is likely to have nothing but nut flush draw. There were high chances that he would be driven into a strong pat hand on the left so he folded his cards. His analysis turned out to be pretty accurate as for a game with double dummy because I got three aces and entered the pot. The betting player called me having straight and nut flush draw. A card for flush came on the board and Buxter’s good early analysis saved him al his chips.

Game Tactics in Pot Limit Omaha Hi Lo. The 3rd Part

Read first:

Pot Limit Omaha High Low Strategy. Part I,
Omaha Hi Low Pot Limit Common Mistakes. Part II.

6) Don’t play aces without suited support too aggressively.

Some players think that they should bet on the maximum each time they have two aces in preflop. If a third ace comes on the flop all fun from those proud aces goes to their opponents. With such a combination you simply enter the pot especially if you have a lot of money.

7) Believe that your opponent has the combination he’s driving at.

This statement of course has a lot of exceptions but in most cases it is fair. If you don’t stack the deck then in a common victorious game you should fold some winning combinations. There is nothing to be ashamed of in that your opponent sometimes wins the pot by bluffing. Allow your opponent sometimes to lead a smart game. A player taking police functions and trying to call each and every raise is in triple danger. He may be wrong and have worse hand so that his opponents may kick him out of the pot in further streets or draw something better.

Suppose there are JJ3 on the board and someone makes a bet. Obviously he has three jacks or better but you think that he’s trying to steal the pot. If you call him and he has three jacks you lose. If you call him and he doesn’t have three jacks you may lose anyway if he continues to bargain (are you going to keep on calling all the time?). If you think that some smart alec is simply trying to kick you out of the pot then raise him. If he really has three jacks and his side cards aren’t very impressive he can fold them.

8 ) Make bets on good drawing hands.

I consider bet raises on the basis of good drawing hand to be a better tactics then check-call or check-raise. If you make bets your opponents have no reason to think that you have a pat hand. And more importantly you’ll win more pots without a blow. If you pass (check) and all the others too there is no reason to be happy that you don’t have a pat hand. It is likely that you could have taken the whole pot by a simple bet. If the next card didn’t complete your hand, its valuability drops at once from the flop when there still were two cards to come.

Delayed bet will be then less reasonable than it would have been in preflop. And even if the turn card creates you a combination it won’t earn you as much money as the flop bet could. A drawing hand bet works better against one or two opponents than against a lot of them because the chances that the whole field will fold cards are much higher.

9) Never give up even if you consider your hand hopeless.

It is quite possible that your opponent won’t be impressed by this new card on the board either. Assume on the flop you get straight draw and flush draw, you make a bet and one of your opponents calls. If a pair is formed on the board you don’t have to pass (check) automatically. Your opponent may be drawing as well and he may have a pair or two not including the pair card. In many cases you’ll have to fire at him once more. Hardly will he call without three of a kind or full. A lot of players whose hand is supplemented by a pair on the board automatically pass (check) on their hands.

To my mind in most cases the strategy of a small bet is great because a bet in such position will add trust to your actions in case of your bluff if a pair appears on the board.

Here are some tips to help you avoid the most common errors in pot limit games:

1) Don’t stick to closely to nut flush draw!

Nut flush draw is a good hand in holdem. If a pair appears on the board you have chances to win anyway if you draw the flush. A pair to an ace is usually a winning combination as well. In Omaha forming a pair with board cards is usually fatal and two aces win a pot seldom.

A starting hand like AJ73 has a small potential to straight. It’s better to have a hand like A986. Before you decide that you received a through ticket you need to get straight draw and nut flush draw in your hand.

2) Don’t overestimate your eight-sided straight draw!

Straight draw is not threatened by three-card flush or a pair appearing on the board. Players used to pot limit poker consider straight draw as an automatic playing combination if there isn’t flush or full possibilities on the board.

In pot limit Omaha the game price with such a weak hand can be wrong. In Omaha there appear quite often possibilities of thirteen-sided and seventeen-sided straight draws, so why tie up with only eight-sided combination?

3) Let the key cards help you to define the bluff.

For example, if there is Q64 on the board I have more chances to try and take the pot by making if I had ace of trumps (A) or a queen than on the contrary. Possessing of one or two key cards improves your chances to steal the pot.

4) Ask yourself a question: Is your opponent likely to stand the pressure?

Does your opponent have a hand strong enough to stand a serious pressure? This question defines your tactics on playing a drawing hand either you will play it fast by raising or slow by calling.

Don’t try and force a player which made bets and drove a trade with a combination missing one card to fold his cards. If you have reasons to think that his hand is not very valuable then your chances to win by aggression are doubled. The opponent may fold his cards or you can draw something yourself. Just for your information – online video poker strategy that helps to develop your analytical skills.

5) Bet the pot but only if there isn’t the possibility of straight or full.

If on the board there is something like K96 then you can’t possibly feel safe with any hand. If you want to bet anyway do it with the complete pot. You must make your opponent play at as worst chances as possible. If there is a pair on the board like 10102 or three suited cards Q84 you play on the principle “either – or bet” (You’re demonstrating a specific hand and either you have it or you’re bluffing). Half a pot bet or two thirds one seems to be the right decision. Pots with such a flop can often be taken easily by a modest bet.

If you make small bets on your good hands your bluff of the same size will be more convincing. You may be called more often in the cases when you have claimed values and you won’t have to risk so often trying to steal the pot.
